Currency
Japanese currency is the yen (¥). There are 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 yen bills (2,000 yen bills exist but are rarely seen). Coins include 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen.
Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, department stores and most restaurants, but some smaller shops and eateries are cash-only, so it’s a good idea to carry some yen. Rechargeable IC cards such as Suica and PASMO can be used on trains and buses and at many convenience stores.
